Is nipple numbness this long after surgery normal?

It’s been a year since my augmentation and my nipples are still numb. The underside of my breasts have numbness too. Is this normal??

  • At least in other surgeries it's normal if parts of your skin remain numb for the rest of your life. I had my knee operated in 1997 and still can't feel a thing on some parts near the scars. Same thing with my boyfriend who's had his neck operated like 10 years ago.

  • I’m only 5mpo and my left nipple is numb. My PS it will go away. I’ve read it can take up to 2 years. But I do think it’s common to never go away, I’ve heard that as well.

  • Where where the implants inserted? Through the nipple?

  • Unfortunately while it is a known complication it isn't common. At a year you are unlikely to regain 'normal' sensation there but the little nerves that are working (that live 'next door' to the ones that aren't) will increase their territory some.  Meaning, the numb areas will shrink in size. I am sorry this happened to you.

    • Dr. Michelle Roughton thanks for the reply. Will this affect me in the future  if I want to breastfeed? My nipples can still get hard with sensation and they get sensitive around my period so I’m guessing that’s a good sign?

    • Jessica lynn Great question.  I don't think it is going to have any affect on your ability to breast feed.  In order to breast feed from the nipples they just need to be attached to ducts. I actually thought it was easier to breastfeed my third one (after implants) as he had something to press against (the implant), rather than loose skin.  In fact early on in each breast feeding experience I would have welcomed a numb nipple. πŸ˜‰

    • Dr. Michelle Roughton that’s wonderful thank you! That was my main concern before getting implants so this is very reassuring.
