Implant insertion thru armpit

Hello ladies!  I'm new on here but have my breast lift & implant surgery scheduled for 6-12-19.  Very excited but nervous.  I'm having my implants placed under the muscle but the insertion is thru the armpit area.  I cant find a lot of information on this technique.  Any info, pros & cons, would be greatly appreciated!

  • Hi! I would recommend doing some online research. From what i have read and heard from surgeons this is not a very precise method because of the distance to the pocket.

  • Mine were placed through the armpit (I also had a lollipop lift). No issues here. It was my PS preferred method, but he said I could chose which ever option I wanted. I didn’t have a preference, so I decided his preferred method would be best.

One downside is the incision site can only be used once. So, if you need a revision, going through the armpit again won’t be an option. Pros - they do not need to cut through the muscle to place the implant. Less chance of bottoming out.  Also, that area of the body tends to heal faster, my armpit incisions healed very fast. I don’t even see the scars and for most that can see theirs, they tend to blend in with the natural creases of the armpit.

Sara L hey I’m 9dpo and went thru the armpit as well. When did yours heal enough to shave over? My incision is closed and the dissolvable stitches are dissolved but it’s still elevated so I can’t shave over it.

Cecilia I'm deathly afraid to shave over my armpit and even if I was brave enough I can't see over my boobs to shave properly. Never had that issue before but I'm happy I have it now 😂😂

  • Mine said he can do it that way but it isn’t his preferred because the instrument they use might not be long enough sometimes to create the pocket. That’s all I know.

  • I know Google has a lot of good information but I ask my plastic surgeon about different insertion locations and he told me that he will not do it through the armpit. He's been doing it almost four years and said the reason he will not do it through the armpit is because infection. He said since it's through the armpit and you sweat infection is more common

  • The armpit itself isn’t the most sanitary of places so I know a lot of surgeons don’t want to go that route because of possible infection and also because of lack of precision getting the implant into the pocket. My PS doesn’t offer that method at all.   If all you’re worried about is scarring, my scars are very minimal and I went under the muscle, crease inscision.  I don’t see them when I look in the mirror.  There’s really only one person that would see them, and I know my husband sure doesn’t mind them 😉❤️ Good luck with your decision!

  • Hello! I met with one surgeon who did this technique. He said it’s newer and provides a less visible scar. I then met with another surgeon for a consultation and he prefers crease incision. I spoke with him about an axillary incision and he said the cons are,

-say you have a bleed during surgery. It would be more difficult to find since you are not right in good vision of the breast.

-infection could be a bit more common with sweat and hair growth.

For those reasons and the thought of recovery being a bit more difficult with reaching steered me away from axillary incision. I hope that helps some!

  • Have you decided on an incision type?

I am scheduled 7/3 and my PS prefers the incision through the armpit as well.

Colyn I had my surgery yesterday and went thru the armpit.  My PS said the armpit for me would be ideal because I’m so small plus it’s less chance of the implants bottoming out thru the lower incision.  Him and his colleague has been doing the armpit incision for years.  The only pain I have is in my armpits & the top part of my boobs by the armpit. I even went 2 cups sizes smaller.  I’ve always been big but added a cup size with each child.

HCB glad to hear you’re well!!! I did move my surgery date due to some summer events. So won’t be til August 21 now. However, still planning on incision through armpit. My surgeon has been doing it that way for years too!

Colyn my PS will do mine through armpit as well, but I’m shocked to read that no one is receiving Botox underneath their arms to temporarily get rid of the sweating for 6-9 months. That’s what my PS is doing with me; so I don’t have any risk of infection. He also said you can go through the armpit area again, but only if you go with saline. He can’t do that with silicone, it would have to be another way.

Sabbyx that’s interesting.  My PS never did mention anything about Botox.  That would make perfect sense if it does stop the sweating.  I’m 4 dpo and my incisions in the armpit look great.  The only problem so far is the reaction to the tape they used to cover my incisions.  I have blisters everywhere on my right breast & just a few on the other. I’m praying for no infection.  I feel great just feel a little beat up lol
