10DPO Is this discharge normal?

I get this discharge when I massage my breast, wear the booby band, and when removing the gauze pad and bra, which I do after soaking it in the shower for fear of it sticking and hurting. So far, only on this breast and mostly where you see it clearly, but also on the left side of my nipple, as of today, and I have a tiny band aid on it as my incision seemed to be separating there. My last PO appointment was Wednesday (10/16) and she didn’t seem worried by it, should I be? She took out every other stitch and I feel like since then I’m seeing more of this yellow discharge in new places. This spot has been consistently draining since surgery.

  • How far out from surgery are you?  Sometimes we see scant drainage (small amounts) with stitch abscesses (where the body is trying to absorb the absorbable suture) but instead makes a little zit like thing.  Some patients are particularly prone to making them and it can seem like there's a little zit like thing at every stitch we place under the skin.  If it's a larger opening or more than what can be absorbed on a bandaid per day, I would be more worried. Good luck!

I would be honored to see you at my office in Raleigh, NC!

Dr. Michelle Roughton Thank you! I was 10 days post op, two weeks this Wednesday. I’ve haven’t seen any drainage in these areas since asking you on Saturday evening. I have been putting a bandaid  on both spots to help, they are coming off clean. I go in on Wednesday for my 2 week post op appointment.

    • MommyB26 Wonderful news.  It was likely a stitch abscess and it's resolved.  :)
