Post op insomnia... help!

Hi ladies! I know this question has probably been asked on the FB site but I am now 8 day’s post op and cannot sleep at all. I’ve been off the pain meds since Sunday and I can barely sleep since then.  I’ll sleep for two hours and then I’m up for hours on end. I’ve tried melatonin which helped a little, but it doesn’t knock me out. I think the elevation is a problem for me, and not exercising impacts my sleep, too.  Any one else suffering with this? Recommendations? Thanks in advance from a sleep deprived zombie. :)

  • I’m so sorry you’re having trouble sleeping! I’ve had serious insomnia for a good part of my life and tried lots of things so I can give you some suggestions. Do you have a hard time getting comfortable with the new boobs? Are you in pain at all!? Or do you think it’s more psycological? I do wonder if insomnia could be a side effect from stopping the pain meds too - what meds were you taking? For me, my insomnia has always been related to a racing mind and worry. I start to play the “I’m so tired but I’m afraid I’m not going to be able to sleep!” track in my head and it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. This was all before my BA by the way, so not at all related to that. What helped my problem (and legit changed my life because now I can SLEEP!) is marijuana. I got my medical card, bc in my state you can’t get it legally without that, and I tried several different strains and methods of consumption and what works like a charm for me is vaping, just a small bit (like one puff) before bed. I use a high CBD strain that doesn’t even get you “high”, it relaxes me though and I consistently sleep well. I was worried about marijuana use before and after my BA and I did go off it while I was on the pain meds but my surgeon said it was fine to start again after that and I did. I know there’s a lot of stigma about marijuana but for me it was the only medicine that helped and I tried ALL the prescriptions and all the natural methods first. Might be worth a try! But DONT smoke it, that’s  definite no after a BA, and check w your surgeon. There’s lots of other things you can try too, you could ask your GP about sleeping pills, but in my opinion marijuana is safer and more effective.
